We Learn with God as our Guide

Year 2

Term Five - The Scented Garden

How do seeds grow into plants?

We have started our experiment to see how seeds begin to grow or germinate.  Our seeds are in sealed bags on wet tissue and we have taped them to the window so that they get the warmth from the sun and lots of light for when the shoots start to appear. We'll be watching carefully to see how our bean seeds change over the next few days.

Term Four - Beat Band Boogie

A lot of the work for this topic involved learning the songs and a spoken verse for the Witney Partnership Concert. Fourteen children from our class went along to Wood Green School to perform alongside children from the other Witney primary schools. They performed brilliantly and I was very proud of them.

We also did a number of science experiments to learn about our sense of sound. Here are some photos of us outside measuring how far different sounds travel.

A visit from Father Pat

Father Pat came to visit us to talk to us about the Sacrament of the Sick. We learned how much sick people and their families appreciate a visit from their priest when they are ill and how the Sacrament of the Sick helps them to cope with their illness. Father Pat allowed each child who wanted to to experience what it feels like to be anointed with the oil used in the sacrament. Clicking on the photo below will open more images.

We created some art to portray the season of Lent. We used purple as this is the liturgical colour used during Lent and grey to symbolise the ashes that are put on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday.

Some people drew crosses to think about Jesus' sacrifice on Good Friday, others drew hands to show that in Lent we try to help other people. The number 40 is because there are 40 days in Lent.

Glass Xylophone

We did an experiment to learn how the volume of water in a glass changes the pitch of the sound that is made when the glass is struck with a metal beater -we used a teaspoon!  We found an amazing clip of a man playing a glass xylophone with about 100 glasses. The Last Supper

We role played the Jesus' Last Supper with his friends. We learned how Jesus showed his friends how he wanted them to serve other people by washing their feet. Mrs Browne washed the feet of each child. You can view the other photos by clicking on the image below.

Easter Art

Please click on the photo to see more images of our term four Art day.  In the morning we created cartoon drawings and in the afternoon we created Easter Art.

Term Three - Towers, Tunnels and Turrets

Voices Across Time

We began our term with a workshop led by Joe and Flo from Voices Across Time. They helped us to bring the story of the Siege of Rochester Castle to life by helping the children to write and perform lyrics and drama. They recorded the children's work and went away to produce a professional recording of their work. If you click on the image below there are a few pictures of our time with them.

Back in class the children worked in groups to design, build and decorate their own castles. If you click on the image below you can see more photos of their work in progress and the completed castles.

Later in the term we investigated how folding and twisting newspaper made it stronger. Each group designed a bridge and we tested their strength using bananas and then kilogram weights. Our strongest bridge easily held 4 kg. Click on the photo below to see more images.

Term Two - Street Detectives

As part of our topic which looked at how our town has changed over time, we learned about how people might have shopped before there were supermarkets. We made our own bread rolls for a baker's shop. They were delicious! Clicking on the image will open more pictures.

Fun in the Snow

We had fun playing together in the snow that arrived in December. Click on the image below to see our other photos.

Christmas Art

We spent a happy morning making Christmas Art. Have a look at some of our work.

Christmas Nativity - Whoops-a-Daisy Angel

We joined with year one to perform our Christmas Nativity. You can see photos of all the cast by clicking on the photo below.

Term One - Beachcombers

Sea Life Centre Birmingham Trip

We started our topic with a  wonderful day at the Sea Life Centre in Birmingham.

A visit from Jack's dad to dissect a squid.

Jack and his dad often go sea fishing and so we were very lucky to be able to share their expertise when it came to dissecting a squid. Jack's dad brought along some live crabs for us to see too. We also dissected a rather smelly mackerel before moving on to the squid. We all learned so much.

If you click on the picture below you can see what we got up to.

No Pens Day

We put our pens away all day today to remind ourselves of all the other ways we communicate with each other. We cheated a tiny bit in maths and took chalk outside to solve addition problems.

Harvest Festival

We welcomed John Barker from CAFOD to talk to us about their work overseas. Children from across the school brought in dried and tinned food which we took to the Witney Food Bank. Clicking on the image below will bring up some photos of the assembly.
