Relationship and Sex Education

At Our Lady of Lourdes, we understand the importance of providing an education which gives children the knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe and to prepare them for life and work in modern Britain.

Our RSE provision helps our children to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life. Through PSHE and RSE, we help pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up.

At Our Lady of Lourdes we have adopted TenTen: Life to the Full, the mindful approach to RSE, which brings together Personal, Social, Health Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. This links well with our School Vision enabling every child to flourish in all aspects of their development. Our school virtues are embedded well throughout and provide a thread on which to base our learning.

The scheme follows a four-stage structure which is repeated across four different learning stages:

  • Early Years and Foundation Stage
  • Key Stage 1
  • Lower Key Stage 2
  • Upper Key Stage 2

Within each learning stage, there are three modules:

  • Created and Loved by God (Me, My Body, My Health; Emotional Well-being; Life Cycles)
  • Created to Love Others (Perosnal Relationships; Keeping Safe)
  • Created to Live in Community (Living in the Wider World)

Children are taught a lesson a week where teachers focus on tailoring the lessons to their children’s needs and to enjoy building the relationship with their class, getting to know them better as unique human beings.

Teaching strategies are varied and are mindful of preferred learning styles and the need for differentiation.
